How to set the sensitivity of an FX301 fiber optic sensor

The FX301 Fiber Optic Sensor allows sensitivity adjustment via automatic or manual threshold fine-tuning using the MODE indicator and Jog switch on the amplifier.

Automatic Sensitivity Setting

The FX301 is factory-configured with automatic sensitivity, which optimizes detection based on the connected fiber and environmental conditions. This mode is suitable for most applications and ensures stable operation without manual intervention. The sensor uses EEPROM memory to store settings, allowing reliable operation over repeated use .

Manual Sensitivity Adjustment

For precise control, the threshold value can be fine-adjusted manually:

  1. Press the MODE key to activate the MODE/ADJ (yellow) indicator .
  2. Use the Jog switch:
    • Turn to the “+” side to increase sensitivity (higher threshold).
    • Turn to the “–” side to decrease sensitivity (lower threshold).
  3. Pressing the Jog switch confirms the new threshold, which blinks three times to indicate acceptance .

Fiber Insertion and Locking

Proper fiber insertion is critical for accurate sensitivity:

  • Insert single-core fibers into the beam-emitting inlet and multi-core fibers into the beam-receiving inlet .
  • Snap the fiber lock lever down completely; incomplete insertion reduces sensing range and stability.
  • Ensure fibers are not bent inside the amplifier to maintain consistent sensitivity .

Sensitivity Selection Function

The FX301 allows selection between:

  • Low sensitivity
  • High sensitivity
  • Automatic sensitivity This can be configured via the amplifier interface, depending on the application requirements .

Additional Notes

  • Avoid using the sensor for personnel protection; it is intended for object detection only .
  • Repeated teaching or threshold adjustments are limited by the EEPROM lifetime, but normal operation supports extensive use .
