An armored optical cable is a type of fiber optic cable that includes a metal armor layer, typically made of stainless steel or aluminum, wrapped around the fiber core. This armor protects the delicate optical fibers from crushing, bending, rodent attacks, moisture, and other environmental hazards while preserving signal integrity . Armored cables are ideal for harsh environments, including underground conduits, industrial sites, and high-traffic areas.

Structure

A typical armored optical cable has a multi-layered design:

  • Outer Jacket: Made of polyethylene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), providing resistance to weathering, abrasion, and chemical exposure .
  • Metal Armor Layer: Stainless steel or aluminum tubing that offers bite-proof, cut-resistant, flame-retardant, and tension-resistant protection .
  • Inner Protective Layer: Includes tight-buffered fibers, aramid yarn for tensile strength, and sometimes a secondary sheath to further protect the fibers .
  • Optical Fibers: Each fiber is coated with a buffer layer (commonly 900µm) to enhance mechanical protection and flame resistance .
