How to configure the circuit breaker and residual current device in the distribution box

To safely configure a distribution box, connect the main isolator first, then the RCD/RCCB, followed by individual MCBs for each subcircuit, ensuring proper phase and neutral connections.

Safety Precautions

Before starting, turn off the main power supply to prevent electric shock and wear insulating gloves and protective goggles for safety . Only qualified electricians should perform this work, as improper installation can create serious hazards .

Wiring Sequence

  1. Main Isolator (DP MCB): Connect the phase and neutral lines from the energy meter to the main isolator. This acts as the primary switch to manually disconnect the entire system .
  2. Residual Current Device (RCD/RCCB): Connect the output of the main isolator to the input terminals of the RCD. The RCD protects against leakage currents and electric shocks but does not protect against overcurrent . Ensure the RCD is installed after the main isolator so it is protected from overcurrent.
  3. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs): Connect the output of the RCD to the individual MCBs. Each MCB protects a specific subcircuit from overload or short circuit. The phase line from the RCD is connected to the MCBs, while the neutral line is connected to the neutral bus bar .

Connections and Layout

  • Phase Lines: Feed from the main isolator to the RCD, then branch to each MCB.
  • Neutral Lines: Connect from the RCD to the neutral bus bar, then distribute to each subcircuit.
  • Earth Lines: Connect all earth wires to the earth bus bar for grounding.
  • Device Ratings: Choose MCB ratings based on the load and wire size. The RCD rating should be equal to or higher than the main MCB rating to ensure proper leakage protection .

Additional Tips

  • Mount all devices securely on the DIN rail and ensure they are firmly seated .
  • Verify input and output terminals on the RCD before wiring.
  • Test the RCD using its test button after installation to confirm proper operation.
  • Label each MCB for the corresponding subcircuit to simplify maintenance and troubleshooting . By following this sequence and ensuring correct connections, the distribution box will provide overcurrent protection, leakage protection, and safe distribution of electricity to all subcircuits.
