Cable Tray Construction Techniques

Cable tray construction involves careful planning, material inspection, alignment, mounting, securing, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Preparation and Planning

Before starting installation, obtain approval for shop drawings, material submittals, and construction designs from the client or consultant. Inspect the site to ensure it is safe, accessible, and prepared for installation. Identify the layout, dimensions, and mounting heights of the cable trays and coordinate with other trades to prevent interference during installation . Conduct a safety briefing and toolbox talk for all personnel involved.

Material Inspection

All cable trays, accessories, and supports must be checked against approved material submittals. Inspect for physical damage, coating condition, and compliance with specifications. Only approved and undamaged trays, bends, tees, reducers, covers, hangers, bolts, and supports should be used . Document any discrepancies or damages and report them to the QA/QC engineer for corrective action.

Installation Procedure

  1. Support and Alignment: Determine support spans based on manufacturer load charts and project requirements. Use trapeze hangers for ceiling suspensions or cantilever brackets for wall-mounted runs. Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment using spirit levels or laser tools .
  2. Mounting Trays: Secure trays to supports according to approved shop drawings. Maintain proper spacing and alignment to prevent sagging or misalignment. Ladder trays are preferred for large power cables due to ventilation, while ventilated troughs are suitable for smaller control or instrumentation cables .
  3. Fixings and Hardware: Use bolts, nuts, and other hardware as per specifications. Ensure all fixings are tight and secure, and that trays are free from dirt, oil, or corrosion before installation .
  4. Cable Identification: Clearly label each tray or conduit with feeder names and branch numbers to facilitate future maintenance .
  5. Bonding and Grounding: Ensure all trays are properly bonded and grounded according to NEC Article 392 and project specifications .

Quality Assurance and Safety

  • Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of installed trays, supports, and accessories.
  • Verify conformance with approved designs, standards, and load calculations.
  • Barricade work areas and follow HSE safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment and warning signs .
  • Supervisors should monitor installation competency and provide re-induction or retraining if necessary .

Post-Installation

After installation, perform a final inspection to ensure all trays are aligned, secured, and free from damage. Document the installation, including any deviations, and ensure all QA/QC records are completed. This ensures compliance with project specifications and facilitates future maintenance or upgrades . By following these steps, cable tray systems can be installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with electrical codes and project requirements.
