Optical Module Status Monitoring

You can check the status of an optical module by using CLI commands to view interface recognition, DDM/DOM diagnostics, and optical parameters such as power, voltage, and temperature.

Step 1: Verify Module Recognition

First, ensure the optical module is properly installed and recognized by the device. On most switches, you can check the interface status:

  • For Cisco devices, use show interface [interface-id] to confirm the port is up and the module is detected .
  • For Huawei devices, use display transceiver interface [interface-type interface-number] to view module recognition and basic information .

Step 2: Identify the Module

Determine the module type, vendor, and serial number to ensure compatibility:

  • Cisco: show inventory or show interface transceiver lists the hardware model, vendor, and serial number .
  • Huawei: display transceiver [interface interface-type interface-number | slot slot-id] provides detailed module information .

Step 3: View DDM/DOM Information

Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM) or Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) provides real-time metrics:

  • Key parameters include transmit power, receive power, temperature, voltage, and current .
  • On Cisco switches, use show interface transceiver detail or show interface transceiver diagnostics to read these values .
  • On Huawei switches, display transceiver diagnosis interface [interface-type interface-number] shows DDM information .

Step 4: Monitor Optical Power and Thresholds

Check that the optical power is within acceptable ranges:

  • Low or high optical power can indicate fiber issues, misalignment, or module faults .
  • DDM/DOM readings allow you to compare actual power against the module's specified thresholds.

Step 5: Troubleshoot Issues

If the module is not recognized or readings are abnormal:

  • Verify the module is vendor-certified for the device .
  • Check fiber connections and cleanliness.
  • Replace the module if DDM/DOM values indicate persistent faults.

Step 6: Optional SNMP Monitoring

For automated monitoring, DDM information can also be accessed via SNMP:

  • Enable SNMP on the host device and use OIDs specific to the module to query temperature, voltage, and optical power . By following these steps, network administrators can verify module health, detect faults early, and maintain stable fiber-optic connectivity.
