Morocco to fiber optic cable

Morocco is strengthening its fiber optic network through domestic production and international submarine cable projects, enhancing digital connectivity and regional integration.

Domestic Fiber Optic Production

Morocco has significantly expanded its domestic fiber optic cable production through FBR Cables, the country's leading manufacturer since 1999 . A new industrial facility in Berrechid, inaugurated in February 2026, consolidates all operations into a single platform, covering 15,000 square meters and equipped with state-of-the-art technology . The factory represents a MAD 200 million ($21.86 million) investment, creating 165 direct jobs and increasing annual production capacity to 70,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables, meeting nearly 60% of domestic demand . This expansion supports Morocco's digital infrastructure, strengthens the “Made in Morocco” label, and positions the country as a regional export hub for Africa . The Berrechid facility produces a wide range of cables for indoor, outdoor, aerial, and LAN networks, adhering to international quality, safety, and environmental standards . The project aligns with royal directives to reinforce Morocco's industrial and technological sovereignty, ensuring local expertise drives the country's digital transformation .

International Connectivity: Morocco–Canary Islands Submarine Cable

Morocco is also enhancing international connectivity through a submarine fiber optic cable linking Morocco to the Canary Islands, scheduled to become operational by 2028 . The project, led by Islalink in partnership with Canalink, will start at Arinaga (Gran Canaria), pass through Gran Tarajal (Fuerteventura), and reach the Moroccan coast near Boujdour or Tarfaya . The €49 million project, partially funded by the European Investment Bank, will employ ultra-thin glass fibers designed to withstand deep-sea conditions, ensuring high-speed, stable transmission of voice, video, financial, and scientific data . This cable will enhance data resilience, support regional digital development, and strengthen Morocco's role as an African and Atlantic digital hub .

Strategic Impact

These initiatives collectively:

  • Expand high-speed internet access for households and businesses across Morocco .
  • Support the rollout of 5G networks and modern digital services .
  • Promote local industrial growth and job creation .
  • Improve regional connectivity between Africa and Europe, facilitating data traffic rerouting and cybersecurity . Morocco's fiber optic strategy demonstrates a dual focus on domestic production capacity and international digital integration, positioning the country as a key player in regional telecommunications and digital infrastructure development.
