An ATS-equipped distribution box automatically transfers electrical loads between primary and secondary power sources to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Principle of Operation

A Distribution Box with an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is designed to maintain continuous power to connected loads by monitoring the primary power source and switching to a backup source when necessary. The ATS continuously measures electrical parameters such as voltage, frequency, and phase of the primary source. When it detects a fault, outage, or deviation beyond preset limits, the ATS initiates a transfer sequence to the secondary or emergency power source, such as a generator or backup utility feed, ensuring minimal interruption to the load .

Key Components

  1. Main Control Unit: Monitors both power sources and manages the switching logic automatically .
  2. Power Contacts: Physically connect and disconnect the load from the respective power sources .
  3. Voltage and Phase Sensors: Detect abnormalities in the primary source to trigger the transfer .
  4. Transfer Mechanism: Executes the actual switching between sources, either mechanically or electronically .
  5. Protection Circuits: Prevent damage to connected equipment during switching .
  6. Status Indicators: Display the current operating state of the ATS .

Transfer Logic

In normal conditions, the primary source supplies power to the load, and the tie breaker remains open. If the primary source fails:

  • The ATS opens the normally closed breaker of the primary source.
  • The tie breaker closes, connecting the load to the secondary source.
  • Once the primary source is restored and stable, the ATS can automatically or manually switch the load back . The transfer time is typically in milliseconds to a few seconds, depending on the system design, to minimize power interruption . The ATS can handle a wide range of current and voltage ratings, from a few amperes to several thousand, and from low to medium voltage systems .

  • Industrial plants to prevent downtime of machinery.
